Visual Art Project

Public Sculpture Design

In this unit of learning students had to reflect on the purpose of art in society and how art can be used to convey a message. Students learned about numerous activist and public sculpture artists that often comment on or raise awareness about social issues. The project engaged students in designing site-specific sculptures for a city environment that required them to interrogate the value of art in public places to support engagement with visual culture and enhance a wider societal appreciation of visual art. Students learned to work through different stages including research and investigation, exploration, and concept development, creating a final work and reviewing and presenting. These stages were designed to align with the Leaving Certificate art specifications and examination process which gave 5th year students a chance to gain exerience in this type of project layout.
