Art Practice
This page contains work made for my Undergraduate Degree Show in Fine Art (Painting) in 2017 at the Centre for Creative Arts and Media, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.
Artist Statement
My work aims to showcase the differences between bare skin and make up, heavy application of make-up is used to make these differences clear and to exaggerate visibility of different textures on the skin.
The works starting point is always through photography or found imagery. I then choose the photos I’ve found most successful in displaying the effects of make-up. Many of the photos are close-up shots of a face or a particular feature. Using photoshop the photos are often cropped and adjusted in size to achieve the desired effect of a painting and to match with canvas sizes and boards.
I find it interesting to look at the difference between skin with traces of make-up on it and how skin compares without it. I’ve tried to make these differences clear through my application of paint, by playing with the thickness of paint and using different mediums. Trying different canvas sizes and boards was an important part of producing the work as it allowed me to experiment with different techniques and brush strokes.
